Join the Multimodal Movement — ebike

May 30, 2023

In this month’s Multimodal Monday episode on KITV’s Island Life program, we feature how folks are using their e-bike as their primary mode of transportation to get around. Kaimuki resident Jason Howie talks about how he proudly rides his e-bike to the gym, the store and to places just for fun! Riding his e-bike is his way to reduce traffic and his carbon footprint.

Hawaii Department of Transportation Director Ed Sniffen shares information about the state’s electric bike and moped rebate program. He details how residents can take advantage of the program if they qualify and how his department is working to expand the program.

This year-long Island Life Multimodal Monday series, which kicked off in January, highlights the benefits of using multimodal transportation choices, such as a bus, bicycle and rideshare, among others. Viewers will see how everyday multimodal transportation users go about their day without driving a car and how making the choice isn't difficult, which helps to reduce carbon emissions and traffic.

Another significant benefit of not owning a car is saving money on gas and maintenance. In Hawaii, personal vehicles cost $16,200 per household per year. Factoring in all public costs (state and county expenditures, social and economic trade-offs, and real estate value of land set aside for roadways and parking), the total comes to $40,600 per household per year.

Transportation Choices

Ulupono Initiative has partnered with Blue Planet Foundation and The Sustainable Transportation Coalition of Hawaii (STCH) to develop a Transportation Choices resource page about sustainable, convenient and accessible transportation choices in Hawaii. These types of choices help Hawaii residents reduce their environmental impact, support healthier living, improve safety, and help reduce individual and collective transportation costs. Learn more >>
