Hawaii’s first autonomous electric shuttle launches at UH Mānoa
Jul 28, 2023
The University of Hawaii at Manoa will soon be home to the first autonomous electric passenger shuttle in the state. The project is a collaboration between the Hawaii Department of Transportation and UH Mānoa. It will serve the university’s flagship campus as part of its Rainbow Shuttle fleet. The vehicle will eventually also offer mobility-on-demand services in East Kapolei communities.
The shuttle, which was showcased at the WASHTO (Western Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) 2023 annual meeting in June, is an AV Star All-Electric Autonomous Min-E Bus that accommodates 14 passengers. With eco-friendly features saving 660 gallons of gas annually and cutting 13,021 pounds of CO2 emissions, the project meets safety standards and contributes to the state’s transition to electric vehicles and sustainable infrastructure.
