Meet our ohana: Murray Clay

Murray Clay is Ulupono Initiative’s president, providing strategic direction to all of the organization’s efforts. Among his most recent public roles was serving as a leading voice and intervener in developing the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission’s Performance-Based Regulation framework, which gives the utility the right incentives to accelerate achievement of our 100 percent renewable energy goal.

Prior to joining Ulupono Initiative, Murray accumulated more than a decade of career experience managing hedge funds and private equity portfolios. He now leads the Ulupono team to ensure maximum, positive impact toward a more sustainable, resilient Hawaii, leveraging team members’ diverse skills across the disciplines of finance and investment, grant making, public policy and regulation, and communications.

Murray graduated from the United States Air Force Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in international affairs, advancing to service as an intelligence officer for the U.S. Air Force.

He received a Master of Business Administration degree with high honors from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Ever aligned with his personal sense of duty and love for the community, Murray continues to honor the work of the U.S. military through his service on the USS Missouri Memorial Association’s board of directors. He also works to enhance Hawaii’s financial prosperity through his service on the Oahu Economic Development Board.

Outside of Ulupono’s offices, Murray is an avid scuba diver as well as a European history buff and collector of medieval arms and artifacts. He and his wife, Jodi, are king and queen to five young knights of the round … er, kitchen … table.
